Industry updates, plus our new home…

It’s an extra special week here at LUX as we make the move to our new home! Have a peek inside the fresh HQ, as well as discover what else is ripe for the picking in the food and drink world…

LUX Moves Home!

We’re delighted to open the doors to the new LUX HQ at Leith’s Sugar Bond. First built as a sugar refinery, we believe it’s quite fitting and possibly fate that we’ve managed to find an office boasting a food substance in its name. After a whole load of elbow grease packing up our LUX life, we’re delighted to be settling in to our new pad.

Romanesco Season

Classed as rather an unusual vegetable, Romanesco is coming into season with its striking appearance and its nutty flavour. The strange-looking flower bud comes from the brassica family, which also consists of broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and cabbage. It can be served raw, lightly cooked, or cooked through.

Our Senior Content Manager, Leila, loves Romanesco roasted in olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic and butter – delicious!

RBS Food & Drink Conference

Focusing on ‘the year of innovation’, we attended the RBS Food & Drink Conference at Gogarburn Conference Centre for some most inspiring food for thought. Keynote speakers included  Irn Bru’s Brands Controller, Martin Steele, who hammered home the importance of brand identity, while Genius Foods’ CEO, Roz Cuschieri, championed joyful gluten-free baking, showcasing the brand’s innovative journey from small start-up, to worldwide wonder.

Visit exhibitor stands showcased just some of Scotland’s fantastic larder, offering the chance to taste a wealth of produce, including IQ Superfood Chocolate (the Orange and Wild Raspberry chocolate is to die for) and Kitty Campbell’s free range eggs – we even walked away with a dozen in our bags (we can confirm they made truly excellent French Toast for breakfast the next day).

France Say ‘Au Revoir’ to Plastic Plates & Cups

France becomes the first country to ban all plastic plates and cups in a law that was passed last month. Disposable dishes will need to be made from biologically sourced materials, and businesses have until 2020 to fully comply. We would love to see other countries following suit in the near future!

Cheers to Oktoberfest

Beer lovers rejoice! If you love a good brew; October may well just be your favourite month of the year. The world’s largest Volksfest is back and attracts millions of tourists from across the globe to celebrate in Munich, Bavaria and Germany. This annual event runs until the first weekend in October – plenty of time for beer aficionados to enjoy a cold one (or few).

We of course didn’t forget to join in, the LUX team celebrated at Tempest Brewing Co’s Oktoberfest Saturday 24th September. Held at the brewery in the Scottish borders, guests could sip tasty brews, while enjoying live music and delicious street food. Here’s Nacho soaking up the atmosphere:
